Buy With Confidence: Body Care

Overwhelmed with information trying to choose safe bath and body care products? Keep it simple with our top five tips!

1. Clean

The Environmental Working Group’s SkinDeep database is a fantastic resource to discover how safe a product is. For a quick check at the store though, look for and avoid the following ingredients:

 fragrance

 triclocarban (in bar soap)

 triclosan (in liquid soap)

retinal palmitate or retinol (in moisturizers)

 boric acid (in diaper creams)

 DMDM hydantoin

 diazolidinyl urea and imidazolidinyl urea

 ceteareth

 PEG and polyethylene

2. Natural

You may value organic ingredients, or you may simply be looking for ingredients that are relatively natural. Many people are happy with a mix of both. We do tend to favour “natural” (though this is not a certifiable nor regulated claim) over organic — for our reasons why, check out our post “Why Don’t You Call Yourselves ‘Organic’?

3. Simple

You can increase your chances of using safer body care products by sticking with a simple ingredient list. Shorter is better! Another good sign is if you are able to pronounce the names of the ingredients. If scientific names of botanicals are listed, do they also list the common name so you know what they’re talking about?

4. Fresh

If you are sure you’ll use the product before it goes bad (bath and body care products should feature a symbol that indicates how long it will stay good after opening), you may wish to buy fresh, handmade products. Buying fresh gives that personal, boutique touch that can make your personal care routine feel more special. If you don’t feel confident that you will use the product before it spoils, you can stick to the other points on the list.

5. Your Favourite

In the end, you need to choose a product you’re going to use. You should love the scent, the way it makes your skin feel, even the way the product looks. This isn’t your first consideration, but it is a great way to narrow down your list of clean, natural, simple and fresh options. Often it might be the product that first jumps out at you on the shelf!
